Penguin Workshop children’s books, an imprint in the Penguin Young Readers division, is seeking a Designer who will be responsible for designing and managing a varied list of books that includes board books, picture books, chapter books, illustrated novels, graphic novels, middle-grade novels, non-fiction titles, some YA novels and gift books. The team is open to considering at various levels, including Junior or Senior.

The Penguin Workshop group also includes the imprints of Grosset & Dunlap (The Little Engine That Could), The World of Eric Carle, Frederick Warne (Peter Rabbit), Mad Libs, and Penguin Licenses. We make every kind of children’s book for every kind of child ages of 0-12+ across all formats. Our list includes best-selling picture books illustrated by Jessica Hische, Oliver Jeffers, and Dan Santat.

Specific responsibilities include:

  1. Design and manage all stages of book production, including working with illustrators, creating designs and series branding, and preparing files for the printer.
  2. Creates, maintains, and strictly adheres to schedules.
  3. Work collaboratively with all members of the team from concept to bound book.
  4. Traffics materials for approval with multiple stakeholders.
  5. Prepares press-ready files including specialty printing processes.
  6. Remains current on art, design, and publishing trends and brings new ideas as well as expertise to the Design team.

  • A portfolio that highlights your ability to combine type and image—hand-lettering and illustration skills a plus!
  • Ability to multitask and work under tight deadlines
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail
  • Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator)
  • Knowledge of pre-press and four-color printing processes
  • Interest in pop culture
