Senior Data Scientist - Apptio Cloudability

The Challenge

As part of the Apptio product suite, Cloudability is on the leading edge of cloud cost management and optimization. We use the latest technologies to help our customers understand, visualize, and take control of their cloud costs. Building our application requires a deep understanding of our problem domain and a passion for technical challenges. As a Senior Data Scientist, you will work closely with your team to build the Cloudability platform while honing your craft.

The Team

The Data Science team at Cloudability uses billions of dollars of spending to build data products that help people use the cloud better. We are a small team that is focused on rapid iteration and quickly moving ideas from prototype to production. On any given day, you might brainstorm with the sales team, explore data visualization techniques for heterogeneous spending patterns or build internal APIs to power future data products. The Data Science team is located in Portland, OR, and we expect new team members to join us on site. The team deploys and manages it’s models in the production environment and shares on-call duties. Each of us takes a week of on-call at a time.

The Role

As a Senior Data Scientist at Cloudability, you will work closely with the Data Science Team to understand the problem domain and technical challenges of our space. You need to be passionate about data and exploring this feature domain. Our Data Scientists spend their time exploring datasets, extracting new features, and building models. We work closely with the product team to build data-driven products that provide high value to our customers. This should be something that gets you fired up.

We expect the Data Science team members to become subject/domain experts in the Cloud, as well as in the product area they develop models for. This is a cross functional role and you may be challenged to work closely with design, product and engineering. Several years of industry experience with data modeling and shipping data products is required, including experience with machine learning and statistics. All of our data science tools run on Python and Pandas, and you should be fluent in both. Experience deploying models and managing cloud services is a plus.

In a typical week, you will:

• Work with internal teams to leverage data to improve existing products.
• Interact with data from a variety of sources to develop and test hypotheses.
• Participate in code reviews, provide feedback, and give direction to the te
• Join weekly standups to discuss project status, new projects, and blocking issues.
• Commit code to our production systems, as well as participate in deployment, testing and validation of new features.

If hired, we expect that:

Within one month you’ll: Fix a bug/issue with an existing model/feature built by the team.

Within three months you’ll: Improve and/or add feature to an existing model/feature built by the team.

Within six months you’ll: Talk with customers or Product Managers to explore a new product feature.

Within twelve months you’ll: Become a subject/domain expert for one or more features of our product.

• You are fluent in Python, Pandas, and machine learning techniques.
• You are an expert in cloud services, or have the desire to become one.
• You are excited to learn, happy to share your knowledge, and capable of receiving constructive feedback.

• You show independent initiative and problem-solving; you are willing to make a strong effort to understand your problem before you seek help.
• You are able to help troubleshoot bugs and reproduce issues we see in the field.
