Role
We are looking for a talented, collaborative researcher with a strong background in Artificial Intelligence and natural language processing to join the AI Products and Solutions organization. As an R&D organization, our mission is to push the boundaries of what’s possible in education and to positively impact millions of learners around the globe. Degrees and formal qualifications are important, but for this position relevant experience and a proven track record to deliver are paramount. You will be working within a highly agile team responsible for developing cutting-edge educational technology with an emphasis on employing student writing as a means to assess and improve their expression, critical thinking and content understanding. Using techniques from natural language processing, cognitive science, machine learning and especially deep learning you will work on advancing the state of the art and enhancing the company's learning technology portfolio to solve practical problems for our customers. The ideal candidate will have broad interests in technology, language, cognition and education, who is motivated to design and implement substantive improvements to the company's educational offerings, and is highly skilled in researching and developing innovative ways to contribute to the future of learning.

Responsibilities:
Design, develop and evaluate text analytics, statistical models and computational algorithms to improve the impact of Pearson products, services and processes.
Apply a variety of machine learning techniques, from linear regression to the latest neural network modeling techniques to improve the efficacy of our educational materials and pedagogy.
Design data collection approaches that capture relevant user behavior to enhance both content and overall learning experience.
Demonstrate ideas through building functional proofs of concepts.
Communicate research and operational findings through appropriate methods that may include internal reports, journal papers, or executive summaries, and internal or external presentations.
Work collaboratively with other members of the Lab and product partners to advance the goals of the Lab.
Qualifications
Requirements:
Graduate degree and/or 2 years equivalent experience in a quantitative field with evidence of successfully applying natural language processing and machine learning techniques to substantive problems
A passion for and demonstration of conducting research while maintaining an end-product vision.
Experience with linguistic and statistical analysis of natural language utilizing applications from Artificial Intelligence and/or Natural Language Processing, including corpus-based continuous language models based on word embeddings.
Solid programming experience in modern languages such as Python, proficiency with database technologies and some software development tool-chain experience with tools such as git, pivotal, Docker, Trello as examples.
Evidence of solving significant problems with one or more deep learning frameworks (Tensorflow, PyTorch...). Experience in effectively applying GPUs in training and prediction, a strong plus.
Strong collaborative skills including understand alternative points of view and contributing to cross-functional problem resolution.
An interest in cognitive processing and an appreciation of the difficulty in bridging educational goals and technology.
Ability and desire to solve problems pragmatically and to quickly learn new concepts and methodologies as needed.
Evidence of good communication skills.
