Software Engineer – Metrics & Observability

The Job:

The Groupon Engineering Metrics and Observability team is looking to hire a Developer/SRE with experience in distributed web applications and interest in data collection, transport, aggregation, and visualization. The Metrics team’s charter is to ensure that Engineering and Production Operations always know the current and past states of the entire system with fine granularity, low latency, and flexible access. Groupon operates at hyperscale with 500+ micro services and millions of users and transactions a day. Metrics team leverages custom software, open-source solutions, and 3rd party services to provide metrics, observability, and ad-hoc querying across thousands of hosts. We operate what we build, devops style.

What kind of person are you and what experience do you need?

• 5 or more years hands on design, development and operations experience
• Experience with large scale distributed web application development and operations
• Developing and operating large scale distributed Linux based infrastructure systems.
• Strong software development foundation and practices
• Full lifecycle ownership (development, testing, deployment, operations)
• Expert Java or Python Proficiency
• BS or MS in Computer Science or equivalent experience & commitment to continual learning

Nice-to-haves:

• Experience with development and operations of metrics, analytics, and alerting systems (Wavefront, Telegraf, Nagios, Collectd, Splunk etc)
• Experience building and operating high-scale RESTful services
• Experience with Java performance optimization
• Experience with golang
• Knowledge of Containers and Kubernetes is a plus
