The Department of Comparative Medicine (DCM) is one of 12 basic science departments in the School of Medicine. DCM is the central laboratory animal medicine resource at the University of Washington, supporting over 114,000 assignable square feet of animal facilities with an average daily census in excess of 100,000 animals across multiple species (e.g., rodents, rabbits, swine, and zebrafish). The department employs over 175 individuals who provide a comprehensive range of animal husbandry, veterinary, and laboratory services across numerous vivaria. The UW animal care program is accredited by AAALAC International and provides services to over 400 principal investigators. DCM faculty members, post-doctoral fellows, and residents conduct basic and clinical research on a wide range of subjects including, but not limited to, comparative aspects of infectious disease, aging, cancer biology and genetics.

POSITION PURPOSE
Vitamin A research laboratory and the Gnotobiotic animal core have an opening for a Research Scientist/Engineer 1 (NE S UAW RSE). The ideal candidate should have a solid background and experience in mouse research and basic rodent handling, husbandry, and colony management skills, and must exhibit and have ability and willingness to learn new techniques and procedures. This position will be split 60% in the research laboratory and 40% in the GNAC.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The primary duties of the research position will include (60%):

Plan, implement and manage in vivo studies using various mouse models such as obesity and inflammatory bowel disease under supervision of the PI.

Daily execution of studies under supervision of the PI including but not limited to enzyme assays, cell culture, retinoid analyses.

Management of mouse colonies including genotyping.

Maintains accurate and up to date research records that provide sufficient detailed information for reproducing results or procedures by other individuals.

Analyze data and present findings to research group.

Help write grant proposals and manuscripts.

Maintains laboratory equipment and ensures proper functioning.

Organizes and maintains clean and safe laboratory environment.

Order, stock and maintain laboratory supplies.
The primary duties of the GNAC position will include (40%):

Germ-free mouse colony management-prepare supplies, working in flexible film isolators.

Animal husbandry using sterile technique – isopositive cages.

Drug injections (IV, SQ, IP).

Blood draws, oral gavage.

Germ-free mice rederivation.

Basic microbiology: Gram staining, aerobic and anaerobic culture for sterility testing.

Lab maintenance and data entry.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Work Schedule:

Day shift work schedule will consist of five consecutive, 8-hour workdays; future work week schedules may change to meet the needs of the department.

Occasional work outside of regular work hours will be required.

This is an essential position. The employee is expected to work under conditions that other employees are not required to report to work, such as inclement weather and UW suspended operations.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor’s degree in biochemistry, biology, chemistry, physiology and one year of relevant experience,

OR Equivalent combination of education/experience.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Willing to work with mice and managing mouse colonies.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Willing to work flexible schedule dictated by experiments including some weekends.

Experience and proficiency handling and working with research mice.

Sterile technique.

Ability to work independently as well as in a team setting.

Excellent communication skills – verbal and writing.

Basic computer skills such as excel and word.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Attention to detail.

Meticulous organization skills.

Demonstrate ability to work in teams.

Experience in handling mice for oral gavage, various injections and blood collection methods.

Literature search; data analysis using statistical programs such as Prism.
