Under general supervision, the Patient Account Representative is responsible for the handling of incoming calls and inquires related to patient accounts, responding to written correspondence, contacting patients and responsible parties to assist with the resolution of outstanding patient account balance. In addition, a variety of tasks relating to claims processing; contacts patients and responsible parties to resolve patient account balances ; investigates account status and initiates the collection process.

Responsibilities

  • Answers calls arriving through call system in a timely and professional manner.
  • Identifies problem accounts with payors; investigates and corrects errors, follows-up on missing account information, and resolves past-due accounts.
  • Contacts responsible party to resolve outstanding patient account balances.
  • Establishes requested payment plans and monitors adherence to plans by responsible party.
  • Utilizes hospital billing system, payor websites and system interfaces to manage accounts in a timely and effective manner.
  • Sends correspondence to patient.
  • Provides resources and information to patients and callers.
  • Initiates applications for Financial Assistance as requested by patients.
  • Directs accounts to outside collection agencies using establish procedure when appropriate.
  • Contacts appropriate SCCA Departments to obtain necessary information to manage accounts.
    Prepares reports to identify and resolve accounts receivable and referral problems.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • A minimum of one year customer service experience in a business setting. Healthcare experience preferred.
  • Ability to communicate verbally, in person, on the telephone and in writing in a clear and concise manner.
  • Strong listening skills.
  • Ability to apply critical thinking and good judgment when resolving patient complaints/issues.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Interpersonal/human relations skills.
  • Ability to respond to questions in a tactful and professional manner.
  • Ability to make basic numerical calculations.
  • Ability to follow established processes and procedures.
  • Ability to maintain accuracy and pay attention to details.
  • Ability to interpret accounts and related documentation.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and thoroughly review account information.

Preferred:

  • Customer service skills strongly preferred.

This position is patient facing and/or requires access to Fred Hutch clinical facilities. As such, full COVID-19 vaccination is required as a condition of employment, without exception. Booster doses are strongly recommended but not required. If declining a booster, completion of the COVID-19 Vaccination Status Form Questionnaire and COVID-19 Booster Declination Training is required. Because of our immunocompromised patient population, there are no medical or religious accommodations available for any employee who is patient facing and/or requires access to Fred Hutch clinical facilities. The hourly pay range for this position is from $22.64 to $32.23 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
