Surgical Technologist - Certified - Surgery IP 001 - Full-Time,Day - Ascension Borgess Medical Center - Kalamazoo,MI

Full time night shift. 7p-7a, 36 hours per week. Variable days including weekends, holidays, and call per unit rotation. This is a float position between the Main OR and Same Day Surgery.

What You Will Do

As an Associate with Ascension Michigan, you will have the opportunity to assist the surgical team to provide patient care under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse. Demonstrates increasing knowledge of physical and technical requirements of surgical intervention: Highly complex surgical cases/specialty resources. Act as a resource person regarding instrumentation requirements, availability and set up. Able and willing to troubleshoot. Demonstrate advanced knowledge of anatomy and physiology. Ability to scrub more than three specialties proficiently. Willingness to assist circulator and takes initiative to ensure availability of necessary equipment. Expert in chosen specialty area; performs all specialty procedures independently, is identified as a resource person for more than 1 specialty. Acts as preceptor to actively train new staff and participate in the orientation process, offering performance feedback to management. Responsible for maintaining effective communication skills. Participate in monitoring and maintaining resources in specific department. Understand and contribute to the vision/mission and goals of the department. Work in a secure department with access to areas where medications are stored. Handle and label medications on the sterile field under the direct supervision of licensed personnel.

Responsibilities:

  • Follow the aseptic technique standard within the surgical setting and corrects any break in technique.
  • Arrange operating room equipment and supplies following surgeons preference card and procedure requirements.
  • Follow policy and procedure standards for sponge, needle and instrument counts.
  • Receive, prepare and maintain tissue and lab specimens for pathologys.
  • Use the computer to pull preference cards and mark supplies used in room set up.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of all specialty areas, roles and responsibilities of the Surgical Technologist in the surgical setting.

What You Will Need

Licenses/Certifications/Registration:

  • Required Credential(s):
    • BLS Provider obtained within 3 Months (90 days) of hire date or job transfer date. BLS Provider credentialed from the American Heart Association (AHA) obtained within 3 months (90 days) of hire date or job transfer date.
    • Surgical Tech credentialed from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) obtained prior to hire date or job transfer date. Certified Surgical Tech credentialed from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NRSTSA) obtained prior to hire date or job transfer date.

Education:

  • Diploma
    • High school diploma/GED required Completion of an approved Surgical Technologist program prior to hire date or job transfer date required.

Work Experience:

  • None required.
